Artist Notes

I’m working here and there on a new series of styles for Blackbox/bbLean. My focus is on color use, which is not easy for me. Though I suppose I will eventually bow to the “gray text on black bars” trend. Here is my ‘development environment:’

- PStart menu (program launcher)
- bbStyleMaker
- ColorCop
- 3DCC4
- bbLean 1.17, unmodded

The beauty of Blackbox styles is that everything, from the window skins to the wallpaper, can be encapsulated in a single text file. I will probably still try to bundle a tiled texture wallpaper in the final product, as gradient backgrounds aren’t exactly eye-catching.

Included in this download: a copy of the style shown, anode_alienforce, a snazzy style for your starfighter.

The widget is usually called a pager. It’s a visual representation of what’s going on in all your workspaces, or virtual desktops. As you seem to have guessed, each of those little colored slabs in the pager is an open window.

The pager provides a sense of space with multiple workspaces, since only one workspace can show at a time. This particular pager is an extended feature of the bbIconBox plugin that comes with bbLean.

I seem to recall that LiteStep also has its own pager plugin, and IIRC, so does the SharpE shell. I’ve also seen this feature in Gnome and perhaps also KDE. I know that Macs have virtual workspaces too, so they may also have something like this.

I don’t know if there is a standalone pager app, though it makes sense that the app would also have to support multiple workspaces. I think Microsoft published a free tool at one time that lets you simultaneously view all your virtual workspaces at once, though not in the form shown above. It was fairly slick.
