Erebus LS by Anomareh in Litestep

Erebus

Artist Notes

UPDATE: After some testing with someone on 7 in #litestep it seems most of the 7 incompatibilities were due to module load order. I’ve updated the theme here and there shouldn’t be anymore issues.

So here it is. My first LS ever. Hope it sees some use.

Erebus LS

A LiteStep theme roughly based on my TextMate theme of the same name.

Thanks

First, I’d like to quickly give thanks to the people that helped me make this theme what it is.

+ Greywool and alurcard2 over in #litestep were a big help. They helped me out a lot when it came to the odd one off issues I encountered. Thanks to both of you guys.

+ Everyone in #pixelfuckers for putting up with all my pestering and giving me their opinions on it’s progress. You could hop in there at any given time and chances are each person in there has helped me out in some form at some point. Thanks to all of you guys as well.

Notes

All modules should download just fine if you don’t already have them with the exception of jDesk 0.75. You can find it in this (direct link) news post as well as in /Extras. Just extract the dll to LiteStep/modules. If for any reason, any other module can’t be downloaded, you should be able to find it either here, here, or here.

This theme requires the font Semplice Regular (download) which can also be found in /Extras.

Configuration

The widgets are the only things that really require configuration.

Album Art

The album art widget will search the folder the music is being played from first for cover art after which it will check the ID3 tags. You should configure erbAlbumArtCoverName to whatever your library uses. If you have multiple naming schemes you can configure that like so:

erbAlbumArtCoverName "cover.jpg" "folder.jpg" "albumart.png"

If more than one of those files are found for the currently playing track, whichever is listed first will be used. (For example, if both cover.jpg and albumart.png were found for the current track, with the above setting, cover.jpg would be used.)

NOTE: If you are not using Winamp you need to find if your player has a plugin that emulates Winamp messages and install it. For example, if you are using foobar2000, you need to install foo_vis_shpeck.

NOTE: The album art widget will only be displayed if album art is found for the currently playing track. It will automatically fade in and out while listening to music depending on whether or not album art is found.

Net Stats

The net stats widget doesn’t really require any configuration and will work with the default settings. However, depending on your connection, you may wish to change erbNetInScale and erbNetOutScale in config/themeVars.rc. These two settings control each graph’s maximum (in kB/s). For example, if you set erbNetInScale to 500, and were downloading a file at 250 kB/s, your download speed would be plotted in the middle of the graph.

Weather

To configure the weather widget you need to find your WOEID. To do this goto http://weather.yahoo.com/. Enter your area code or city in the appropriate box and hit enter. You will be taken to a page with a URL in this format:

http://weather.yahoo.com/<country>/<state>/<city>-<WOEID>/

Simply grab the WOEID from the URL and set erbWeatherWOEID in config/themeVars.rc to it.

Theme Popup

The following settings are configurable from the theme popup (middle click the desktop to access it). The only option that triggers / requires a recycle to take effect is changing shadows.

Bold signifies the default setting.

+ Global
– Shadows (on/off)
+ Popup
– Font Color (orange/red)
– Separator Style (space/line/akka)
+ Sys Tray
– Icon Desaturation (on/off)
+ Widgets
– Stats
> Start Hidden (on/off)
– Album Art
> Enable
> Disable

Various Functionality

+ Desktop
– Middle click, brings up the theme popup.
+ Start Button
– Right click, minimizes all windows.
+ Taskbar
– Middle click, closes the task clicked.
+ Clock
– Left click, toggles the sys tray.
+ Clock Icon
– Left click, toggles the stats widgets.
– Right click, toggles the album art widget.
+ Weather Widget
– Left click, opens your browser to your local weather.

I wish I had litestep installed. Rating just on appearance (and an excellent description), but very sexy gradients, and I appreciate all the work that must have gone into this. The bits at the lower right are especially hot (though I’d think you’d reverse the order on the weather.) Much respect.

You sir, are fantastical!

Major respect for this – Litestep can be a pain to work with, but seeing final products like this make it worth the pain.

My favorite part of this is the statsgraph and the weather widget (how did you get it to display those icons? I’ve always wondered how to do that).

Unfortunately, it’s not working for me in Win7 x64 atm (but im definitely going to try and fiddle with it to see if it will). The transparencies don’t seem to want to work and the albumart/weather isn’t displaying :(

+100 points for all the work this must have taken (and for a stunning final product!)

BUT -2 points because it doesn’t work for me. :(

But man this looks mighty fine. Can’t wait to see what you do in the future :)

Thanks everyone, your comments me a ton.

@mango Are you ever in IRC? Eh, actually lets use the awesome new forums Josh finished. Thread created. When you get a chance toss up a reply with a ss of what it looks like now and we can see about hammering out the bugs. I’d love to try and debug the issues you’re having in 7.

Also thanks a ton for your comments. They mean a lot. Your LS’s are highly respected and they are a huge source of inspiration for me.

@nitz Sorry about the notepad thing, I was using unix line endings which makes notepad unhappy.

About the album art widget, what player are you using, where is your album art saved, and how is it named? I’m assuming you set the var yeah? If you could hop in IRC sometime we can try to get it working. Not sure what the problem is, but have a few things we could try.

this turned out beautiful, andrew. the graphics are top-notch and the animation on stuff like the systray looks smooth. i really enjoyed seeing it go from concept to realization, and it’s a joy to use.

only a couple things went wrong for me (on xp sp2):

-if you open the ‘theme’ or ‘themepopup’ files in notepad rather than wordpad, the text looks all crazy and unformatted.
-i couldn’t get the albumart widget to work.

@andrew: winamp, album art is with each album in their own folders, ‘folder, jpg’ as the naming scheme

Will also have to rate on just appearance, but you know I love it. The originality and style are all your own, and it looks great. Also, the awesome notes must be acknowledged. Great job.
